These materials will make a difference because I can have multiple stations going at a time so that students are actively moving in gym class. We need scooters, mushroom paddles, plastic hoops, cones and other equipment. With the new equipment, my students will not need to wait around for a turn. All of this equipment is not only for movement. It will help with hand/eye coordination skills which are important to work on with the younger students.
I will also be able to use some of the equipment for my older students in grades 3-5 as station work or individual fitness activities. The scooters and buckets would also work well for team building activities with the older students.
The bean bags that I am requesting will be used for hand-eye coordination activities such as tossing/catching alone or with partners, juggling activities and balancing activities. The scooters are a great way to get arm and leg exercise in by using them for pulling and pushing activities. I have found that with these types of activities, students are having so much fun that they forget that they are exercising, and exercising becomes less of a chore.
The hula hoops are a great manipulative piece of equipment as they can be used for hula hooping around the waist, arm, neck and legs and as a fitness station using them as a "tire" run or a station for students to work on "in", "out", through." I have included Katch-a basket and Rainbow catch a cup for more of the hand-eye coordination skills. The colored cones are great for students in the lower grades to move from station to station, and they will also be used for relay races and lead up games such as Defend the Cone.
