I am a 2nd grade Chinese billingual teacher in a low-income, urban school. My students are all part of families who have recently immigrated from China. Their parents and extended family are devoted to their education, but are often working very long hours and do not have the money or knowledge of the English language to help them find books that are "just right" for them. Because of the challenges of learning a second language and coming from families struggling to make ends meet, many of my students are not yet reading at grade level.
Part of our school-wide approach to literacy is to ensure that our students have access to a large amount of "just right" books. A "just right" book is one which is the perfect level for the child, not to easy and not too hard. A book that will challenge and engage them and make them feel like a successful reader, while at the same to helping to move them to the next level.
