My class contains six students with autism (ages 8-11) with the academic and communication abilities of children ages 2 to 6.
I teach pre-k to second grade level reading, writing, phonics, math, and science. I also teach communication skills, hygiene skills, behavior skills, and functional skills. We cook on Fridays (I purchase the food)to practice preparing and cleaning the kitchen. I use verbal language, sign language, and visual supports around my room to increase any form of communication with my students. Although we are a beach school that receives great marks each year on the state tests, my students come from many cities located in the county to attend my Severe and Communication Behavior Disorder (SCBD) class and do not get the same materials as a regular education student.
