My students are taking a huge step in their lives; they are in middle school. They come to middle school thinking that they are tough and grown up. Yet they need and want to be treated like the children that they are.
These 11 and 12 year old students crave attention, but do not want to be singled out amongst their peers. They want to be part of a community, but they do not want to stand out. They want to be big fish, but they do not want to make a splash. They are an oxymoron!
Our school services 6th through 8th grade with around 1,000 students total. Eighty-five percent of the students in our district receive free or reduced lunches. The district encompasses a large area and many of our students travel for a long time on buses to get to school each day.
We have been in our school building, an old high school, for two years. Before that, our school was in mobile trailers because a hurricane destroyed our school. We've come a long way in seven years!
