Students love using hands-on materials when learning math because this helps them grasp the concepts in a concrete way.
Base-Ten blocks and Tens Frames help us learn about place value and let the students visualize addition and subtraction. Having play money to learn math with is much more fun than seeing it on a screen or paper and allows students to physically exchange coins based on value.
Students love to learn about measurement and measure everything they can with measuring tapes during that unit. Decks of cards allow my students to learn math games to enforce the concepts they learn throughout the year in a fun way. Finally, reading telephones help students develop reading fluency and allows them to hear themselves read and become better self-correctors as they continue developing their reading skills.
Using physical, engaging manipulatives and materials create successful and long lasting learning. While learning from home is difficult, especially for my young students, access to these materials will make this challenging time fun and meaningful.
