As an Academic Intervention Services (AIS) math teacher, I help students who are struggling to achieve the NYS learning standards in mathematics in grades K through 5. My support services, in both whole-class and small-group settings, help students overcome various barriers that may affect their ability to learn, such as, attendance problems, family-related issues, discipline problems, and health-related issues.
As students begin to fall behind in math, receiving poor marks or getting answers wrong in class in front of their peers, they begin to dislike the subject. My goal is to keep students, even if they are struggling, excited about learning math and confident in their mathematical abilities. Additionally, I try to help students see how important math is in their everyday lives and the world around them, always encouraging them to continue trying their best.
