To help my students learn and grow amid the pandemic, subscriptions to digital, nonfiction content can provide close reading of age-appropriate, relevant news as well as opportunities for discussion and reflection.
My students make real connections when they have access to personal stories of people who survived hardships of the 20th Century, including The Tulsa Race Riot, the Dust Bowl, World War I, World War II, and The Great Depression.
Students will read nonfiction pieces from digital and print subscriptions, along with historical fiction from classroom books, and they will participate in cross-curriculum teams to synthesize the information and create print and media-based student publications.
