This year I have returned to teaching orchestra (bowed strings) at four wonderful elementary schools in Richmond - Blackwell, Overby-Sheppard, Swansboro, and Woodville.
I know that among my students we have a future conductor, a music teacher, a church organist, an orchestral musician, a film score composer, a copyright attorney, a professor of music, or a music store owner. My students, many of whom come from high poverty environments, deserve the same chance as other children have. Even if my students don't pursue music as a career, the benefits of performing high quality music will permeate their entire academic lives, laying a foundation of teamwork, listening, attention to detail. In short, music is brain-training; it is life training. As a colleague of mine recently said, Music Teachers Make People.
