I have taught 13 years at the elementary level as a general bilingual education teacher and as a reading interventionist. This is my first year working as a Dyslexia interventionist in 2 low-income public schools, one elementary and one middle school. This year, I get to witness what happens in middle school to those kids that struggle with reading since elementary. They are angry and frustrated and at the short age of 11 they already gave up on education. They have a hard time trusting someone because we have been failing them over and over by not understanding Dyslexia and not teaching the way they learn. My newly formed, Dyslexia Department, in Houston ISD is ready to fight for those kids who don't have a voice. It will not be easy but this is how all great wars are won, one battle at a time, step by step, until the last child reads.
