American students continue to lag behind other countries in science and math achievement, dropping to the middle of the pack in K-12 science education for more than a decade. Unfortunately, many students do not have access to microscopes in their schools. Microscopes at one time were viewed as a biology tool. However, microscopes can be incorporated into many areas of science. In fact many scientific disciplines 鈥 ranging from art conservation to food contamination 鈥 require a strong understanding of these 鈥渕agic lenses.鈥
By showing students the thousands of tiny organisms in water or the hairs of different animals, there is a 鈥榳ow' factor there that cannot be achieved from a text book. These type of lessons are the ones that are going to get our students excited and interested in science. Whenever we can make the learning come alive for our students, the more engaged they will be. With access to a microscope, students can learn how to prepare and slide and discover the meaning of microscopic.
