The bike shop at our High School was designed with the understanding of 鈥淣ot every student is meant to go to college.鈥 We teach our students a trade. The bike shop teaches our students how to put others before them, how to serve your community as well as surrounding communities. I teach them the importance of getting to class (work) on time and being ready to work. How to get not only their work done but how to help their fellow students (coworkers) with an issue they may be having. They are learning work ethic and how important it is.
Using professional tools and equipment our students learn how to work together to repair and refurbish bicycles and then give them away to those in need of transportation. The tools I have selected for this project are the same high-quality tools they will find in a Bicycle Repair Shop. The bicycle repair stands, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, wheel alignment gage, cable cutters, spoke wrench and hammer are all made by Park Tools. Park Tools is considered the top of eh line tools in the bicycle industry and by teaching my students to use the very best tools on the market, they will easily recognize the tools and equipment when they go to a bicycle repair shop should they choose Bicycle repair for a career.
