We are a small rural high school in Illinois. These kids are the sweetest and our school truly feels like a family. However, it's not ALL sunshine and rainbows. I have two concerns: my students don't see the value in reading, and therefore many are reading significantly below grade level, and we aren't a very diverse school and my kids really don't have a lot of exposure to other cultures. I think providing them with these books will combat both of those issues - kids can find something that they enjoy reading AND these books can show them the world.
Also, we're on block scheduling, so our kids don't have study halls. This means their only time to go to the library is before or after school. Most of my students, being underclassmen, ride the bus so visiting the library is out of the picture. Having these books in my room would be a game changer as far as access goes.
