"It was a sitting student, it was a standing student, it was a fidgety child, it was a relaxed child, it was a student distracting others, it was a student working quietly..." Research has shown that flexible seating arrangements in classrooms can empower students, giving them a choice over their seating and learning environment. Flexible seating also has physical benefits, allowing students who need movement or to "fidget" the opportunity to do so. I've requested funding for standing desks and bouncy bands for my students who need to burn off energy and alleviate nervousness and anxiety about math.
In my classroom, we always discuss choices--choices of approaches to solving problems, choices of how to respond to situations, choices when prioritizing assignments; help my students to have the choice of sitting or standing while working.
Flexible seating allows students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive. The results of flexible seating are more active, engaged, and relaxed students.
Not only will my students benefit from these seating choices but other students in the building will as well. My classroom is frequently used by other teachers--drama, PE/health, foreign languages.
