High school students are so busy these days whether it's studying for tests, completing research papers, competing in sports at the same time juggling this with the over abundance of technology around them. I see firsthand how social media impacts the identity of our most impressionable youth. While technology today plays an important role in art creation, in my studio art room I emphasize turning the technology off to aid in self reflection and to give them a pure creative environment.
We are approaching a Self-portrait project through direct observation however working at a Title 1 high school has its limits on classroom supplies. Most of our high school students live within the poverty line-some are the first in their family to attend high school. My goal is to have a mirror for each one of my 197 disadvantaged students to reflect on their individual identity-something that many are struggling to find.
