Independent reading is so important in increasing students' overall academic skills. Kids need books to engage their interests and passions, especially in the middle grades where reading has become a struggle for some.
Our library has been largely defunct for a number of years, and as the new librarian it was my (painful) job to weed out books that were obsolete and damaged or moldy beyond help. Our library has a fresh coat of paint and woefully empty shelves. At least 2/3 of our books had to go.
Students are asking for books to take home for independent reading. I love that they are asking! Not only will they be opening themselves to new worlds of imagination, they will be building vocabulary, feeling how skillfully wielded language flows, growing in fluency, and applying the analytical literary skills they learn in English class. Now, we just need the books!
