鈥淭he more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.鈥 -Dr. Seuss Being literate is one of the most powerful skills children can possess. It is a necessary skill that is used every single day. In a world where technology has taken over, I work to help young children develop a love of reading. My students are exposed to books many times throughout the day. These times include read alouds with small and large groups, individual reading time in the classroom library, and most recently, shared reading time, which has quickly become a favorite. Shared reading time involves large books with over sized print and illustrations that are easy for everyone to see. The books are repetitive and predictable so the students can read along. We read the same book out loud, together, everyday for one week. Each day, we read we focus on a different aspect or literacy skill. Through this process the students learn essential concepts about print like reading from left to right, knowing the print on the page conveys a message which is related to the illustration, and how to handle books properly. They also expand their vocabulary, increase comprehension, learn about fluency, and improve their phonological awareness. All of these things are necessary for literacy development as they learn to read and write. This grant would provide us some of our favorite big books and we would be so grateful!
