The ping-pong balls, cotton balls, solo cups, straws, smarties, shaving cream, duct tape, spaghetti, bean-bags, and empty Kleenex boxes will serve as materials for the weekly challenges. Think Minute to Win It challenges, but adapted to fit! The scissors are to allow students to aid in the process of creating the weekly slips.
The materials donated will make grammar exercises even more exciting and more hands-on!
The bandanas are for students to wear as a visual reminder of the teams and to simulate the atmosphere of Survivor. The goal each week is to be the winning team to earn immunity and a small incentive, such as the candy that is requested. The setup of each challenge is similar. Students from each team take turns answering grammar questions verbally, on the board, on a sheet of paper, or on their desk that is smeared with shaving cream (specifically for punctuation exercises). When the student answers correct, (s)he will move to the challenge portion of the activity. The challenges change weekly, but a few examples are as follows: 1) after a correct answer, student will pick up a ping-pong ball with a spoon and run across the room to their team's bowl. The ball must stay on the spoon until they reach another bowl to place it in. The first team to 10 wins. 2) After a correct answer, student uses a bean-bag as a token for an interactive tic-tac-toe board that is crafted out of 6 large hula-hoops. The goal is to be the first team to tic-tac-toe. These examples are just snapshots of the challenges. Once the student completes the challenge, the next student in line attempts the answer and the challenge. This continues until each team member has participated and a team meets the designated amount to win.
