My kids are an eager group of 5- and 6- year olds, bright eyed and full of excitement at the thought of becoming expert readers and exemplary scholars as they matriculate through school. As excited as they are, they face many challenges due to their environment in and outside of school. All of them come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, where their families receive government assistance and where they may be the oldest of several children. Their homes are across the street from the school where crime is high and sharing a story about the latest shooting or burglary is common during morning meeting. Our school is Title I funded, but the budget doesn't allow for many updated classroom materials so when items such as pencils are used up, we are scrambling to replace them, even coming out of pocket more often than not. Due to these distractions, morale lessens as the year trickles by, but my students never give up on the goal: becoming college-bound scholars!
