Our school is a traditional middle school with 85% of the students living in poverty. Many of the students are from single parent homes and many times they go home to an empty house because their parent/s work multiple jobs. Our city has an extremely high crime rate and our students are often influenced by the crime occurring around them. Even with the harsh realities that fill our students lives, they are very receptive to learning about others and helping other people. They often give what little they have to contribute to school wide projects like food drives, Toys for Tots and raising money for Susan G. Komen. Approximately 1/3 of our student body read below grade-level and we are constantly looking for ways to incorporate reading across all content areas.
