I have loved science since I was a child. I grew up in our family's "Lost World Dinosaur Park" in Scotts Valley, CA, 25 years before "Jurassic Park". I pursued a career as a paleontologist and bring my experiences back into my classroom every year: from digging up dinosaurs in Montana to studying the timing of human evolution in eastern Africa. Each year I also engage my students in our family fossil hunting expedition fundraiser where they can dig into the past for themselves. I enjoy bringing science alive for middle school students and our community-based, PBL-oriented science festival engages 200 students per year in original research that supports science and community change in our rural mountain school. Students' projects range from the discovery of copper in our local wells to updating road safety based on studying community traffic patterns. My grants will directly support original student research.
