My students are imaginative, resilient, and full of potential. They’re in Pre-K through 5th grade at a public charter school on Chicago’s South Side. The majority are Black and Brown children from under-resourced communities who often face systemic barriers to opportunity. Many are experiencing formal art instruction for the first time, and they come to class excited to explore, create, and be themselves. They thrive when materials reflect their identities and when the classroom environment feels calming, joyful, and affirming. Art helps them build confidence, process big emotions, and express who they are. With the right resources, they show up as bold storytellers, creative thinkers, and future changemakers.
