There is not subtle difference between a hard chair and a reading nook. My students have found any crevice (sitting under desks, on tables, in cubbies) to try to feel cozy inside a classroom and it is basically impossible! There are not enough carpet squares in the world to make a student want to read. I love to read, I yearn for it! I want my students to feel that too! I believe that if I give them an environment that is inviting and comfy they will spend more time their falling deep into the world of books.
A studious atmosphere is often conducive to some seriously intense reading.
Where do you read the most? In a hard, cold seat facing a yellow desk filled with intimating Math, Science, and Social Studies books? I doubt it! Imagine not having a couch to snuggle up on, or even a bed that isn't already filled with little brothers and sisters. These kids need and deserve a comfortable nook that will make them want to stay in the room.
