For six years, I have taught at low-income schools serving primarily black and brown students experiencing poverty. Now, with a full-time job writing curricula, I use my free time to volunteer in those same classrooms. This year, I am partnered with a first-grade teacher at a school with no librarian meaning no access to books. No books. And in our community, many students rely on the school to provide them with materials such as these to learn.
It is heart-breaking to know that many of our students have not yet enjoyed the moment of reading a story to themselves or sharing a tale with a friend. You can help change that! We need it now more than ever. Our curious, inquisitive, amazing students are really struggling after a year spent learning online due to the pandemic. Imagine, kindergarten spent online and then returning to school where the only place you read is out of a textbook. Help bring the joy of reading to our kids!
