I am a fortunate teacher who works in a school district that values the presence of art in schools! Yet with financial uncertainty being a constant, the art budget has been cut in half since 2010. Regardless, I find my students use their art classes as a way to find their voice and make connections that would otherwise be lost to them without art. My students make up the "melting pot" of America, living in an area with diverse cultures and many coming from families in financial need.
Giving my students opportunities to become culturally aware through the universal language of art seems to bond the students together in a way that allows them to see and appreciate the differences we all have. Art has the ability to transcend and I strive to give my students the opportunity to do the same.
