Thomas Jefferson Elementary School is a title I school meaning it has more than 50% of students who are black, Latino, Native American, and or native Hawaiian; and more than 50% come from low income households. This fact has inspired me to show up for my students each and every day while striving to make learning fun so they get excited about education and want to continue attending school. I focus my curriculum on "place based" lessons focusing on issues in Hawai'i which makes the learning relevant for my students. Although growing up in Hawaii can be picturesque, at times we do face the same struggles other large cities do like homelessness, unemployment, drug use, poverty and a rapidly changing climate. In my classroom we spend time outdoors as well as indoors to maximize our inspiration and get different perceptions on our projects. Since starting at JES in 2022 raised over 10k for the school!
