In August, I will begin the year with 26 ready-to-learn nine year olds. With a varied range of abilities and backgrounds, these minds love being turned on by hands-on experiences, a variety of books, and classroom supplies. Our school is located in a low-income neighborhood with many students living in apartments, foster care, and shelters. Within our school population, there is a wide representation of ethnic backgrounds from Vietnam to Mexico to Senegal to Nepal. Last year, my class alone had eleven different languages spoken in the homes. My hope to involve these cultures into classroom to learn about and celebrate the differences in our world.
