My student is celebrating Puerto Rican culture through education and dance. She is teaching several classes at a local elementary school to highlight accomplished Puerto Ricans and introduce a version of the traditional Plena dance she choreographed specifically for 2nd to 4th graders. The materials in this project will be used to create authentic Plena skirts for my student's dance team to wear during their performance. My student is modeling pride and dedication that will, no doubt, make a lasting impression on the lucky members of her “Plenitas” group. To quote my student, "I would love to use the fabric to make the Plena skirts and use them as a true visual representation of Puerto Rican Culture. Having the children perform this routine can hopefully inspire the dance team to evolve into something bigger and better."
