Putting good books in the hands of children is crucial to their development. Reading has the ability to improve vocabulary and language skills, stimulate imagination, give new knowledge, reduce stress, and more.
As a reading and writing middle school teacher, I recognize the importance of putting great books in the hands of our children at an age where they are trying to understand the complexities of the world around them and sometimes seeking a way to escape.
The Texas Lone Star Reading list provides a fresh set of interesting and diverse books that motivate my students to read more each year. The wait list to check these books out of the library is often long and discouraging. I am hoping to make these great reads readily available for my students, especially those who come to class empty handed and don't know where to begin when choosing a book. "Books are the most quiet and lasting friends, the easiest to reach, the wisest counselors and the most patient teachers." Charles W. Eliot.
