My 8th grade students are outspoken and lively individuals! While some may openly beam with skills and abilities, others bury their brilliance within, and it often takes patience and genuine encouragement and love to mine their specific talent and strengths so that they may bear witness to the development of their own potential. Very few of my students have the opportunity to travel out of our small city; often times what hinders their academic progress is the lack of a rich background that allows them to make connections. Besides using technology to fill that void, we resort to books! It is in literature that they have the opportunity to revisit the secret annex where Anne Frank hid for over two years; it is in novels that my students become invincible characters armed with nothing but bravery and convictions. It is through encouraging text that my students find the voice that compels them to change for the best! It would be a shame to forfeit adventures due to lack of materials.
