My students need a classroom library with authentic books that are appropriate for them. These books are perfect for my level 1 and level 2 English Language Learners! We will use the books during book clubs, independent reading time, and homework. Right at the beginning of the year, we will read "I Am Enough" by Grace Byers as it fits our theme of "Self Identity". We will also read "Island Born" by Junot Diaz to explore the theme "Where I Am From" in our second unit.
These books will not only serve to validate some of my students' experiences but it will show them that being an immigrant and a person of color is something to be proud of. The books will also help my students learn about different cultures and celebrations, such as "The Diwali Gift" by Shweta Chopra, and will enable them to see themselves in printed text. It is important that our students relate to the characters in the books they read so they will develop a love of reading!
