My students are 10th graders from ages 15-16, being raised in a rough neighborhood. They long for understanding and are in the midst of trying to get to know themselves. They are creative, with vibrant personalities and a love of music and the arts. However, they are seldom exposed to it within the classroom and rarely can identify with the literature taught. My students struggle to read; many because they find the material not interesting or because they can't read at all. They come from a failing school district in which many ultimately fall into the hands of the streets rather then the security of a book.
