Offering students multiple means of alternative seating in the classroom not only fosters student voice and autonomy in the classroom, but also boosts engagement, comfort and productivity! My students are all unique in their learning styles and helping them to find an area they learn best in will help them be successful in their fourth grade year.
Universal design in learning gives all students equal opportunity to succeed though flexible learning environments and learning spaces that can accommodate individual learners. The learning space is an important aspect of the whole educational experience. Helping to create a positive instructional climate for my students is the goal of this project. Traditional desk seating at times hinders some students ability to use the classroom in the ways they needed to accomplish learning goals. By providing them with more flexible seating options I am helping them be modern learners.
The classroom environment should be set up to help students collaborate, problem solve, and explore. Standard desks situated in rows do not foster open communication and collaboration. By including multiple means of seating options I am able to foster the personalized, collaborative learning environment my students thrive in.
