I teach 4 classes of 8th-grade fiction during the day. Students learn how to identify and analyze elements of literature. I attempt to make the lessons engaging and relevant all the while still preparing them for high school. Our demographics include a large population of refugees mostly from the Chin state of Burma but more countries are started to be included in that group. A lot of students come from low-income homes as well.
I teach a block class of Sheltered EL. They are a diverse group and show great growth in their speaking, reading, listening, and writing in English. In both classes, I believe in tracking progress and it is encouraging to see how much my students change for the positive throughout the year!
