My students are elementary age students with significant disabilities, primarily with autism or cognitive disability. Some of our students do not speak with words, but use signs, pictures, and voice output devices to communicate. Our students also have poor social skills and need to work on greeting people, using eye contact, and taking turns in a conversation.
Our school has multiple high needs classrooms, including 3 autism units, an early childhood unit (ages 3-5) and 1 unit for students with intellectual disabilities. We also serve children in an inner-city setting with all students receiving free lunch (therefore at the level of poverty). Despite these challenges, our students love to do hands-on projects and participate in the school setting. However, they often require more resources than our regular education students.
