Science is meant to be experienced. Something that often inhibits the development of our students in STEM is a lack of materials. I have made a habit of planning hands-on activities, literacy development, and discussion for my science classes. We typically manage to do a lot with the few supplies and opportunities we have.
While my students are very motivated to learn about the environment, they are not surrounded by opportunities to explore nature and our place in the world. Hands-on activities, inquiry, and collaboration help students benefit from the critical thinking involved with experimental design in response to environmental issues and natural phenomena.
