I teach a class of 3rd-5th grade students who have autism. Our public school is in an urban district in Pennsylvania where 95% of the families are classified as economically disadvantaged. The students in my class vary greatly in their ability levels, though all struggle with academic, communication, and social skills. The abilities of my students range from completely non-verbal and at a pre-k level academically to verbal students performing at a second or third grade level. Even with the difficulties associated with autism, my students are curious about the world and their surroundings and have an innate love for learning.
