Mindful Schools is a company wherein teachers are trained in mindful practices of meditation. Teachers are able to bring the concept, techniques and practices into the classroom to assist with classroom management, behavior management and emotional self-regulation.
Mindfulness is needed in schools because toxic stress impairs our student's attention, emotion, mood regulation, sleep, and learning readiness daily in our classrooms. A Peace Zone in our setting would be a great area for staff and students to decompress and learn to become more self-aware and more capable of managing their emotions and thoughts.
Mindfulness in schools is an important and needed component for all students but even more so for students with special education needs. My project will provide the very necessary coping skills that are needed to manage in today's fast paced life. My project will begin with providing students with a safe place to practice mindfulness techniques, to deescalate and self-regulate emotions and thoughts. I have requested help with purchasing soft, comfortable home-like chairs and rugs to soften the area. Appropriate lighting and aromatherapy will assist students with de-escalation and calibration of emotions and thoughts. Studies have shown that this will have a positive impact on behavior, attendance, attention and overall health.
The goal is to also provide staff with the opportunity to take advantage of these resources so that they can better manage the stress of being educators in our particular setting.
