This is my sixth year teaching third grade and each year I get so excited when the school year begins; I get to meet my new students and I get to try out new ideas in my classroom. Although things change each year, one thing that is constant is my students love for reading. My students become so captivated by the books they are reading, they are constantly talking about the lost in the book feeling they get as they read. My students write down information they have learned, spend technology class researching what they have learned and even hold debates and demonstrations in the classroom about their favorite subjects. I have even had former students come back and ask to borrow certain books to reread.
This year I have 31 inquisitive students who love to read and research the world around them. We are in a neighborhood school on the west side of Chicago. About 90% of my students are receiving free/reduced lunch.
