I serve approximately 600 students in kindergarten through 5th grade in the computer lab that serves as my classroom. My school serves a very high-poverty, high-minority region of our city, with 99% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Many of my students live in government-subsidized housing and have family members who did not complete high school, and therefore do not extol the virtues of attaining a good education. While they are certainly capable of learning, just as all students are, they often lack motivation and do not see how their futures will be shaped by their successes or failures at this level of their schooling. However, my students LOVE to be recognized when they do work hard to achieve something, and they also love to be able to show their parents and families that they have accomplished something to be proud of.
