My students deal with stress from their home lives, overburdened daily schedules, and from their ultra-competitive school district. These teenagers believe that success in life depends upon their daily performance inside the classroom and in a multitude of extra-curricular activities. I once described them as "16-17 year olds going on mid-life crisis."
The young people I see in my classroom need to forge their own sense of purpose by building social-emotional strategies, as well as engaging in the other types of the multiple intelligences.
As our teachers stimulate the students to claim agency over their own lives, our students continually challenge us to provide them with a meaningful curriculum that translates directly to individual success. My fellow colleagues and I constantly push ourselves to meet these young people with engaging activities and crucial content that connect all subjects to our students.
