I teach in a Title I middle school in rural North Carolina. My students are multiple grade levels below in reading and math. We work each day on building early skills and filling in learning gaps. I want my classroom to have a relaxed feel so that students feel comfortable while learning. I want it to feel different from a "regular" classroom. I think that flexible seating will help my students feel comfortable while they are learning. I have requested 5 bean bag chairs and 5 adjustable rockers.
Many of my students feel embarrassed, especially when it comes to reading. Many of my students were behind grade level prior to COVID-19, however, lack of full time schooling for the past two years has only exacerbated this gap.
With the focus on reading, I want the classroom to be relaxed and comfortable. My students work hard each day and are making up that loss every day. These chairs will allow my students to embrace the space they have compared to the standard classroom.
