My colleague Judith Phillips and I, special education teachers at Milwaukee's South Division High School, have initiated a pilot program called C-TRAN for high school students, 18 to 21 years old, with developmental disabilities (e.g., cognitive disability, autism, etc.). We will prepare these students to live as independently as possible and, for those who can hold a paying job, help them to find paying jobs by the time they are 21. We will make these students with disabilities as independent and productive as their varied abilities allow, focusing on each student's special strengths and interests.
Throughout Wisconsin, programs serving such students with developmental disabilities have found them gainful employment and fulfilling full or partial independence. We will have succeeded when each student has gained the maximum level of independence, productivity, and employment as circumstances allow.
