As an adult, I rarely choose to sit at my desk at home. More often, I am lounging on my couch with a book, sitting on the floor and typing with my computer on my coffee table, or leaned over my kitchen counter to write a quick list. These spaces provide me with the freedom and comfort that allow me to be productive.
I want to empower my students to make choices about the working spaces that are best for them. Some students may enjoy the structure of a traditional desk and chair. The materials in this project will create options for students who want or need a different experience. I envision students sitting on the area rug, at a lowered table, writing how-to books to teach others. I imagine students kneeling on the foam mats, working with a partner on the carpet, to sort and organize 100+ items in their counting collection. I can already see students seated on the bench, leaning against a pillow, enjoying one of their favorite picture books.
The items in this project will create a comfortable learning environment for students, which will support them in their focus and lead to greater growth.
