I've found that when my students feel like they are in control, they are more likely to engage in the activity and produce better work products. For the last year and a half, I’ve allowed my middle school students to find any place to work around the room that they would like. Unfortunately, with the exception of one small rug, that often leaves them finding a spot on the cold, hard tile.
Having the ability to customize their learning environment each day will empower my students to take control of their own learning.
I’m adding several more comfortable options for these students to choose to work from. My students were eager and willing to provide input in selecting the work options to be added to our classroom. Whether that's sitting on a pillow at a coffee table or standing at a desk to get the wiggles out while working, my students were very excited to offer their input and a unique perspective for why each option would be beneficial.
