My school is in a diverse Long Island district comprised of approximately 55% Caucasian, 35% Hispanic and 10% African-American and Asian students. About 1/3 of our students are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Approximately 15% of our students are English Language Learners. My school, one of 7 elementary schools, is typical of our district in that it is racially, ethnically and economically diverse and becoming more so every year.
I co-teach with General and Special Education teachers in 7 different classrooms, 6 times a day and my rosters now include a combination of approximately 170 native and non-native English speaking children, in grades 1 ,2, 3 and 4.
