What is alternative seating?
It is a classroom with flexible seating arrangements. We need to remember that kids need to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain, as well as building core strength and improving physical health. With alternative seating, a bean bag, couch, or wobble chair can be transformed into a reading center. This allows students to pick and choose a space in the classroom where they feel they can succeed. The benefits of alternative seating are that it allows students to choose and change their location or position when doing their work in the classroom. By doing this, students have more control over their environment, making it a more student led classroom. With alternative seating, they will be able to do all of that without interrupting their classmates. Alternative seating also enhances collaboration amongst students because it allows for students to easily and quickly pair up in small groups or whole class discussions. Lastly, this type of seating makes learning more fun for students, which is what we want in our classrooms. We want students who are actively engaged and enthusiastic to learn. By having alternative seating I think we are one step closer to accomplishing that goal for our students! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my project to better support my students!
