My classes participate in a program I created called Crew OUT!: Artists and Craftspeople in the CTE Labs. Projects have included the Solar Shed and Mobile Farm Project, a Mobile Greenhouse, a mobile bike repair trailer and Skate the District: Longboards as Transportation. We hope to build community capacity on campus through the professional level STEAM projects in the Metals, Woods, Small Engines and Energy and Digital Design Labs. Sometimes we bring pros into the shops, but lately we have been going to out to partner organizations so students can see what it's like to do projects in professional-level shops and studios. Students get to network career areas, meet outside peers and mentors and explore their metro area. They build large projects over several semesters to learn the design and engineering process, problem solve and develop creative teamwork skills producing projects that boost their community.
