This class set of "The Red Umbrella" will allow my students to sharpen their reading skills, while exploring the plight of the characters in the novel -- a plight that many of my students can relate to, as it is a story of immigration.
Through reading, children learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experiences. Even students who have no experience with immigration can benefit from reading "The Red Umbrella".
As they read, students' minds translate the descriptions of people, places and things into mental images. While they are engaged in a story, they are also imagining how a character is feeling. Students then use this knowledge into their everyday lives.
