After speaking to several teachers currently using "flexible" or "choice seating" in the classroom and hearing their success stories, I have decided to give it a shot! This gives students the ability choose a seating arrangement that best suits their learning. With this being my sixth year teaching, across several grade levels, I have had the opportunity to teach many different students with many different learning styles. I began looking into flexible seating last year when I taught a particularly "fidgety" little fourth grader. I spent the entire year coming up with new ways to help my little buddy learn more effectively in the classroom. Some days, he wanted to stand at his desk, while other days he preferred laying under his desk. I learned so much by watching him. Our most successful teaching days came when he was allowed to move and choose his seating. When he was required to sit still at his desk, we would see the distracted, unmotivated behaviors. Allowing students to choose their seating makes them take ownership of their learning. Students become engaged and more focused and willing to learn. These materials will help the students to succeed, no matter where they choose to learn! I want to be able to meet the needs of ALL of my students. Whether they choose to sit at their traditional desk, lay on the floor, or bounce on an exercise ball, I want them to be successful. This means I need those inviting places for them to choose from. We need comfortable seating options and rugs, but we also need items such as clipboards, lap desks, and dry erase boards to make working from a non-traditional location possible.
