My school is located in an incredibly diverse community with little funding for the arts. With such a wide breadth of socioeconomic circumstances, some of my students are capable of buying or renting quality instruments (giving them a positive experience and a leg up), but many cannot afford this expense. This is similar to giving some students Chromebooks and others old, worn textbooks with pages missing and expecting them all to learn the content the same. This is simply impossible!
We have an award-winning band program, but hardly any funding for instruments or the basic needs of our passionate, dedicated and hardworking students.
Many of them live in a circumstance where they feel they are not supported due to lack of funding for our program. This leads to low self esteem, depression and hopelessness despite how incredible my student's accomplishments truly are.
